Mexican President Felipe Calderón has taken aggressive measures to safeguard tourists to Mexico since his inauguration on December 1, 2006. As part of a widespread federal crackdown on crime, 1,000 Mexican army troops have been dispatched to the state of Guerrero, and are being stationed at military bases in Acapulco, Chilpancingo, the state capital and the city of Iguala.
Mexico, like many countries throughout the world, draws upon federal as well as state and local resources to form comprehensive law enforcement agencies in all major cities. President Calderón has additionally sent joint army-federal police units as part of this country-wide initiative.
Troops stationed in Acapulco are expected to be involved in anti-drug operations, and will initially be sent to areas outside of the city to search and destroy fields, processing plants and transportation routes throughout the region.
“We want all visitors to know that Acapulco is safe place to visit” said Jesus Radilla Calderon, Director of the Acapulco Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The recent increase in troops only serves to prove that the government is commitment in ensuring the safety of tourists.”
